Winter brings beautiful snowy landscapes, a reason for snuggling up by the fire, and all the warm beverages you can drink. It also brings with it harsh winds, frigid temperatures, and dry air. Combine that with tons of holiday parties filled with sugary goodies and alcoholic cocktails. This all adds up to stressed, dry, breakout-prone skin that can be rosier than Santa at an all-you-can-drink eggnog buffet.
However, a few quick tweaks in your routine and a little observation (and moderation) can keep your skin full of ethereal glow and bounce during these next few months. Here are a few of our favorite tips and products for the chilly season. Try one or try them all and get your twinkle on for all occasions, large and small, this season.
#1: Change it Up
Extreme temperatures mean you need to change up your regular beauty routine. Start by evaluating your cleanser. Oil-based cleansers and balms are especially great this time of year since they don’t overstrip skin, and they are great at removing heavier holiday makeup looks. Consider moving from a lotion to a cream to deliver extra hydration and protection against dry, harsh winds. Also, pull back slightly on the use of acids (such as those in toners, serums, and washes) during these drier-skin months, and use them in moderation to avoid aggravation and inflammation.
#2: Turn Down the Temps
On a cold morning, it’s certainly seductive to turn the dial all the way to hot in the shower; however, keep it lukewarm. Hot water actually strips the natural oils present in the skin and the longer the shower, the more you strip. Keep showers to lukewarm and shorter timeframes, and then moisturize as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in softness all day.
#3: Ask Santa for a Humidifier, Honey
The drier the air, the more likely skin is to dry out. Use a humidifier in any room you spend a lot of time in, think office or bedroom, to redeposit moisture into the air. You can also add essential oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree oil to the humidifier to give an extra antibacterial and lung-soothing boost to the air as well.
#4: Count Your Blessings and Your Cocktails
Who doesn’t love all the goodies, both sweet and savory, that crowd tables during the holidays? However, those extra sugars and fats not only call for looser clothes, but can also wreak havoc on the skin causing tightness, dullness, and breakouts. All those pretty holiday cocktails can also cause extra inflammation in the skin and premature aging. Not only that, but it also dilates the pores making an open-pore free-for-all for whiteheads and blackheads. The best way to save your skin from a horrible hangover is to practice moderation in food and drink. Enjoy the season, but switch to a bubbly water after one or two glasses of Dom and pile your party plate with greens and proteins, saving a bit of room for some less-healthy fare.
#5: Rest and Rejuvenate
Follow the natural flow of the seasons and take some extra time the next few months to relax and refresh yourself. Get plenty of sleep and before bed, slather on heavy hand and foot cream with some mitts and booties to get a luxe treatment without the trip to the spa. Treat facial skin with an intensive serum like SkinMedica’s HA⁵® Rejuvenating Hydrator to lock in moisture or Jan Marini’s C-ESTA Face Serum for high-powered antioxidants and Vitamin C before putting on your night cream to awaken with luminous skin.
With a little extra care, your skin can look its best even through the harshest conditions. This winter, try a few of our tricks above to keep your skin glowing all season long. If you need a little help, schedule our facial of the month!
