Is Coolsculpting Safe?

Have plenty of love, but looking to get rid of your love-handles? Like Nora Ephron, do you feel not so awesome about your neck? At ClarityMD, we know you love yourself and are killing it in your day-to-day. But we also know that sometimes, after all the Barre classes and years of healthy eating, there are parts of the body that are just resistant to your best efforts. Should you have to go under the knife or take settling for an answer? We don’t think so, which is why we provide CoolSculpting. Studies show that CoolSculpting is an effective fat reduction procedure that has no downtime and is so comfortable you can catch up on Netflix or check your emails while having it done.

How CoolSculpting Works

A noninvasive, nonsurgical medical procedure, CoolSculpting helps remove fat cells from under the skin using an FDA-cleared process called cryolipolysis. It’s used on areas that are most resistant to diet and exercise. Common treatment areas include the neck, thighs, lower back, arms, and of course, stubborn belly fat. It works by gently sucking the layer of fat into a specialized handpiece that essentially freezes the fat cells away. It takes approximately an hour to treat each body part. After the procedure, it can take anywhere from four to six months for the fat to leave the body. CoolSculpting destroys fat cells so they will literally leave the body, never to plump up again. Most people will have more than one treatment per area for maximum result.

That said, CoolSculpting is recommended for those patients who are at a healthy weight and have healthy habits. The effectiveness of CoolSculpting really does depend on post-procedure maintenance.

CoolScuplting is Effective

So, just how effective is CoolSculpting? A 2009 study focused on that same question and found that cryolipolysis was able to reduce the fat layer by as much as 25 percent. The study participants revealed the full results within three months, but by six months, hit the 25 percent mark.

A review published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2015 found that when surveying 19 previous cryolipolysis studies, patients reported losses of between 14.67 to 28.5 percent of fat in treatment areas when measured with calipers, 10.3 to 25.5 percent when measured with ultrasound. Additional studies also found an added reduction in fat when massage was incorporated two months after the procedure. While researchers agree more and larger studies still need to take place, CoolSculpting has been shown to be a great alternative to invasive surgical procedures.

What Experts Say about the Safety of CoolSculpting

As compared to more invasive surgical procedures, experts agree that CoolSculpting is an ideal choice for people looking to sculpt their bodies. On occasion, there can be some swelling, bruising, skin redness, numbed-nerves or localized pain but based on the studies, that tends to be only one percent of the treated patients, which is a staggeringly low percentage for any procedure. Because there is no anesthesia or cutting, CoolSculpting is a much safer option and carries far fewer risks than other fat-reduction methods.
