What Is Sun Damage?

If you spend a lot of time out in the sun or grew up spending summers at the beach, your skin may show signs of sun damage. When your skin isn't protected by an effective sunscreen, the solar heat can dry it out and strip it of its natural oils and moisturizers. Also, the ultraviolet radiation from the sun, sometimes called UV rays, can change the skin's structure with long-term unprotected exposure. Here are some common signs that you may have sun-damaged skin:

  • Sunburn is familiar to most people and is the first sign that your skin has suffered sun damage. The sun's UV radiation injures the skin. The damage can be minor, but it can also be severe. Some cases result in blisters, fever, and sun poisoning.

  • Dry skin results when the sun robs you of the natural moisture in your cells. It sometimes looks flaky and can make even young people look older than their age.

    • Actinic keratosis is sun damage that appears as small raised areas that feel rough like sandpaper. They may also show up as scaly patches that don't match the color of the rest of the skin. Actinic keratosis doesn't go away on its own, and it's a warning that you should be extra watchful. Up to 20% of these occurrences become some form of skin cancer, and some types of skin cancer can be fatal.

  • Structural changes in the collage of your body happen when the sun's rays modify the building blocks of your skin. Photoaging is a process that occurs when the UV rays change the collagen in the deepest layer of the skin, resulting in premature aging. Actinic purpura occurs when the UV rays break down the walls of fragile blood vessels underneath the skin, resulting in bleeding. People with actinic purpura often bruise easily because of this damage.

Why Sunscreen Is Important – Everyday

It is really important to remember to wear your sunscreen every day or you may be putting your skin at risk. Ultraviolet rays are always present no matter the weather and these ultralight rays are the cause of sun damage and skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen daily saves you from years of visible damage later. Sunscreen protects every skin type.

Is Sun Damage Treatable? Absolutely.

At Clarity MD, we offer various options to treat sun damage. Pico Genesis, eMatrix, CoolPeel laser treatments, and Limelight facials are some ways our team can help you remedy the conditions that make you look and feel older. Contact us today to schedule your consultation. Call (317) 571-8900!
